Since vintage cars often require specific, hard-to-find parts for restoration or maintenance, enthusiasts frequently seek advice on finding original or compatible parts. Finding the right parts can be a challenge due to the age and rarity of many models.
We recently were searching for insanely hard-to-find parts for a 64 Ford Falcon! MAN-O-MAN. We had actually to resort to, and it's what ya need to do at times, finding someone that knew someone, that knew someone who had a few in his garage that was nice enough to save the day. But here are a few clues where to start. ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS OF THE NICE PERSON ON THE PHONE!!!
- Specialized Dealers: Look for businesses specializing in vintage or classic car parts in person or online. Many of these dealers stock rare, original components.
- Car Clubs & Forums: Join vintage car clubs or online forums where enthusiasts share resources and experiences, and often buy, sell, or trade parts.
- Salvage Yards & Junkyards: Explore salvage yards that focus on classic cars. Some yards store older models, which can be an excellent source for original parts.
- Online Marketplaces: Websites like eBay, Craigslist, or specialized vintage car part marketplaces often list both new-old-stock (NOS) and used parts for various makes and models.
- Auctions & Swap Meets: Attend auctions or automotive swap meets dedicated to vintage cars. These events often have vendors offering hard-to-find parts and accessories.
And to my SHOCK, RockAuto was really a good source for older car parts. More so than the standard big box auto websites.
